The Princess of Wales's Annual Christmas Service of Carols Honours Unsung Heroes

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her annual Yuletide celebration at the historic Abbey, with guests including royals, celebrities and local heroes who have helped their communities.

The sizable congregation will listen to a mix of carols, music and readings from actors such as award-winning actors.

Focusing on Kindness and Compassion

The theme of the concert, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

In the audience are a couple named the Cordiners, whose child passed away from a brain tumour, and who established a foundation, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a child with a terminal illness.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often discreetly and without words, and without any expectation or recognition, make an profound impact to the circumstances of individuals," wrote Catherine in a letter ahead of the concert.

A Gradual Return

The princess has been making her own gradual return to the public eye following her health challenges and treatment, last month delivering her major oration since 2023, in which she reflected on recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".

Musical Talent and Access

Guests arriving at the Abbey will enjoy performances from talented youth performers supported by the Future Talent organisation, co-founded by the Duchess of Kent to widen access to instrumental training.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from Wales, has been helped by the organisation, with grants helping towards instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "awesome" to be performing at the evening's event.

"Pursuing music is often costly," Carys said. She is now enrolled at the prestigious music academy, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to cultivate their performance abilities.

A Family Affair

Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who plays the euphonium, will be present at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many important people," she said.

Among the guests will be people from various age groups.

That will encompass young Saphia Turner, nine, honouree of a prize for youthful altruism, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to raise money for local food charities.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been decorated with custom-created holiday decorations, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

Among the musical performers will be Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a Cornish sea shanty group, Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the perfect culmination."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be televised and shown on television on December 24th.
